Hair Transplantation and Minimally Invasive Surgery

Throughout all surgical specialties, there has been an effort to make surgery less invasive and less harmful to the body. An example of this would be removing a gallbladder through a scope and not through an incision.

In the field of hair transplantation, there has also been an innovation to make surgery less invasive. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the technique that is used by hair transplantation doctors. Dr. True and Dr. Dorin have been routinely using this technique. Dr. True pioneered the technique in 2002.

The method is that tiny little punches, ranging from .7mm to 1mm diameter, are inserted shallowly, about 2-4mm, into the skin. The hair follicle is then extracted, leaving a tiny little mark on the donor’s skin. The follicle can then be transplanted to the balding skin.

The amazing thing about FUE is how comfortable it is in the healing process. The doctors have treated hundreds of patients using this method and not one has ever required a prescription pain medication in the post operative period. Even when hundreds of hair follicles, from 600 up to 2,000 in a single day procedure are moved, patients are still comfortable.

The healing is also very rapid. One day later, the original mark is half the size than it was the previous day. After a week, the mark is practically invisible. It allows True & Dorin to now move hair follicles from multiple parts of the body.

Dr. True & Dr. Dorin use this technique regularly and it has helped them treat hundreds of patients. Take a look at this video that explains FUE.
