• Within the past 5 years, Low-Level Laser Light Therapy has been introduced as a treatment modality for hair loss experienced by both men and women

• It is believed that upon exposure to Low-Level Laser Light Therapy, the mitochondria or energy packets of the hair follicle cells are stimulated, resulting in more robust growth of hair. There have been individual cases and small studies that have demonstrated the benefit in reducing progression of male and female pattern baldness.

• There has also been limited evidence that has shown some potential for reversal/improvement of these conditions.

• Almost all of the studies that have been conducted have been with a relatively small number of patients and have been funded by the manufacturer
• To date, there have been no multi-centered independent studies on the effectiveness of Low-Level Laser Light Therapy
• The one benefit that we have observed in patients using Low-Level Laser Light Therapy in our practice is that while there may not be any consistent reduction in rate of hair loss nor in re-growth of hair, there does appear to be a pattern in which the quality of hair is improved; the hair is more robust, has more body, more texture, sheen, and the hair grows stronger. So while we cannot place it in the same category as Minoxidil and Propecia, it is an entirely safe form of treatment, which may provide some limited cosmetic benefit.

• We, at True & Dorin, are strong believers that evidence based medicine makes the best medicine. While we find that there are some intriguing suggestions that Low-Level Laser Light Therapy can be beneficial, we cannot recommend it as having a proven effect.
