What are Follicular Units
Follicular units are the natural groupings in which hair grows. As you can see by this magnified photo of a patient's donor area, there are distinct bundles of single, double, and triple units. Each unit shares the same blood supply and the integrity of the unit is preserved in the transplant process. Because of this elemental concept, nothing of an artificial nature is ever transplanted because these groupings naturally exist.

In the photo above, on a different patient, it is obvious that there is a greater concentration of larger follicular units compared to the first example.
With follicular unit transplantation, the number of grafts transplanted is the same number of follicular units present in the donor strip that is harvested.
