Treating Patients Experiencing Hair Loss Due to Anagen Effluvium

Hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors. If you have recently undergone chemotherapy, have an autoimmune disease, or have been exposed to toxins, you may be experiencing anagen effluvium. This condition is characterized by rapid, substantial hair loss that is caused when hair fiber production is suddenly halted. The team at True and Dorin Medical Group has helped many patients in New York, New Jersey, and Boston restore their hair. Dr. Robert J. Dorin and Dr. Robert H. True can diagnose the cause of your hair loss and provide an effective treatment tailored to your needs.

What is Anagen Effluvium?

Anagen effluvium is a type of hair loss that occurs during the growth, or anagen, stage of the hair cycle. This condition develops rapidly and can cause diffuse non-scarring alopecia. Some patients experience a combination of anagen effluvium and telogen effluvium which often results in limited hair loss. While many patients only experience temporary hair loss, this condition can also cause complete baldness.

What Causes this Rapid Hair Loss?

Rapid hair loss typically occurs when some existing condition or substance introduced into the body inhibits rapid cell production. Hair growth cells may be affected by:

  • Drugs used for cancer treatment
  • Radiation
  • Toxic substances
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Infection

While all of these factors can contribute to anagen effluvium, the development of anagen effluvium can affect patients differently. Depending on the cause of hair loss, the onset of symptoms can begin as soon as one to two weeks after exposure to the catalyst. Infections and autoimmune disease generally result in single or multiple distinct bald patches as hair growth is interrupted in localized areas. Many patients will also experience significant hair loss during and after chemotherapy, however, normal hair growth will typically resume several weeks after treatment has ended.
