Man pulling back hair and pointing to thinning areaStress, trauma, and prolonged periods of extreme emotion can all play a role in a person’s overall health and well-being. It is not uncommon for patients who experience the death of a family member, job loss, physical trauma, and other life-changing events to notice hair loss. If you have experienced hair loss following trauma or shock, Dr. Robert J. Dorin and Dr. Robert H. True can help you restore the fullness and thickness of your hair through an advanced hair restoration treatment at one of their offices in New York, New Jersey, and Boston

Types of Trauma That Cause Hair Loss

Both physical and emotional times of stress or trauma can be contributing factors that lead to the thinning and loss of hair. Although both can result in hair loss, the causes can be quite different.

Physical Trauma

When someone experiences physical trauma, such as being injured in an automobile accident, there are times when the body will naturally redistribute essential nutrients to vital organs. For hair to remain healthy, the hair bulb, which is the area where hair cells are produced, must receive the necessary nutrients for it to remain in a growth phase. If the body recognizes trauma to vital organs or tissue and begins transferring the nutrients away from the hair bulb, those hair cells may go into a resting stage called telogen, which causes hair to die and fall out.

Emotional Trauma

A wide range of emotional stresses and trauma such as the death of a loved one, a major surgery, job loss, severe depression, and period of high stress are also factors that lead to hair loss. These types of extreme emotions can cause the body to enter a “fight or flight” state, as a result of rising levels of cortisol. In some cases, the production of hormones can affect the immune system, which then begins to attack the hair follicles.

Individualized Treatment for Lasting Results

For some patients, hair loss resulting from trauma can last for months or years. During this time, the loss of hair and thinning hairline can lead to further depression, lack of confidence, and issues with self-image. Fortunately, with advancements in hair restoration technology and techniques, most of our patients can achieve fuller, thicker hair that looks completely natural.

Our goal at True & Dorin Medical Group is to help you regain your confidence and improve your appearance through the most advanced hair restoration treatments available.

Our doctors have extensive knowledge and experience performing various techniques, including follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE). During these state-of-the-art techniques, the healing and recovery period is quite minimal, with patients generally experiencing mild to moderate pain for a few days and the removal of any necessary stitches within two weeks.
