Suffering from a burn injury can lead to years of reconstructive surgery and prolonged periods of both physical and emotional trauma. Burns on the scalp can make the recovery process even more difficult, as the scars are continuous reminders of the injury. Fortunately, thanks in part to the incredible advancements in hair restoration techniques, Dr. Robert H. True and Dr. Robert J. Dorin can provide treatment to conceal scarring and return a natural appearance. Whether you have suffered injuries as a result of a fire or a chemical burn, our doctors in New York, New Jersey, and Boston can perform hair restoration after burn injuries to help you move past these painful reminders.
It is our goal at True & Dorin Medial Group to help restore your appearance and conceal some of the painful reminders of your accident.
Why Do Burned Areas Lack Hair?
When a patient suffers a burn to the scalp, the glands that assist in the formation of hair follicles often become damaged. In cases of second and third-degree burns, patients will most likely experience damage to these glands and the hair follicles, as well as connective tissues, lymphatic vessels, nerve endings, and blood vessels. In less severe burn cases, patients may be able to regrow hair within a few months. However, if there is still a lack of growth within one year following the accident, the scarring is most likely too substantial for any natural regrowth to occur. In these cases, professional hair restoration may be your best option.
Advanced Hair Restoration Treatments
Prior to significant advancements in the field, patients with scalp burns and scarring could only conceal the damaged areas with a wig, hat, or scarf. Fortunately, our doctors have gained the necessary experience and training in advanced techniques, such as follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE), to help patients regrow their own hair. By extracting healthy hair follicles from elsewhere on the scalp and then transplanting them directly into the scarred areas, patients can regain a completely natural appearance.
Am I a Candidate for Hair Restoration?
- The severity of the burn
- The size of the affected area
- The time that has lapsed since your injury
For some patients, additional restorative procedures may be required prior to being eligible for a transplant. Healing must also be complete.
